Healthy Snacking

Eggs are an excellent and healthy snackHealthy snacking doesn't mean depriving your taste buds. Try these palate-pleasing snack ideas that are healthful and delicious - and won't wreak havoc on your weight goals:

  1. Seasonal fruit with good-quality yogurt and freshly ground flaxseed
  2. Popped corn. It provides a good amount of fiber and is low in calories. Avoid the added chemicals in microwave popcorn and air pop your own (or pop in a small amount of canola oil) and season with tamari, nutritional yeast and garlic powder - delicious!
  3. Whole-grain crackers with a small piece of cheese or some smoked salmon
  4. A small handful of lightly roasted nuts
  5. Toasted whole wheat pita and hummus
  6. A hardboiled egg (look for omega-3-enriched eggs for added nutritional value) sprinkled with smoked paprika (replace the yolk with hummus for a new twist)
  7. Fresh vegetables with high-quality yogurt - add fresh herbs and seasonings for more flavor
  8. A peanut butter (use natural, non-hydrogenated varieties) sandwich on whole grain bread

I am a big believer in smaller meals and good snacking. I think of it less as a snack and more as a continuation of my healthy nutrition. As long as I lay off alcohol, my craving is for generally healty food.

An egg yolk is better for you than hummus.

A mid-morning snack at work gets me through to lunch -- usually 8-10 almonds and an apple. I intentionally pick almonds because they're not my favorite nut (so I'm not tempted to keep dipping into the can) and because they're one of the healthier nuts. It's amazing how long this snack holds me over and I tend to eat less for lunch as a result.

I like to slice up an apple (Gala apples, preferably) with a tablespoon of unsalted Almond butter. Yum!

Most corn is genetically modified to produce its own pesticide, BT toxin, which explodes the stomaches of insects. A recent study done by a university in France found that it also pokes holes in the human digestive tract. A Canadian study found BT toxin in the blood of pregnant women and in newborn cord blood. Monsanto, voted the most evil corporation by Natural Society, said that it would never enter the blood stream. For more info on the dangers of GMOs (genetically modified organisms) go to the Institute of Responsible Technology's website. They also have a non-GMO shopping guide.

I am a person who is really conscious with the foods I serve, specially with my children. I see to it that what I have for them is healthy and good for their health. Sometimes, this qualification means sacrificing the delicious foods that they want. That is why what I got here is really helpful to me. Hope you can share more healthy yet delicious recipes.

As someone else commented raw almond butter on a sliced apple is truly yummy.

Other snacks I like are grabbing a handful of snap peas; sliced red and/or orange bell peppers; nuts of course, mostly walnuts and almonds, sunflower seeds; WildWood soyogurt topped with berries; air popped popcorn, or sometimes I put the popcorn in a paper bag and microwave. I also like to steam a bowl of broccoli or zucchini and drizzle with a little olive oil, and sprinkle a little Tocomare and turmeric. Everything organic of course!
